Why Puerto Rico?
As a proud Puerto Rican, I've carefully crafted this four-day itinerary to showcase the vibrant culture, rich history, and natural beauty of our beloved island. Each experience is handpicked to offer travelers an authentic taste of Puerto Rican life from savoring traditional cuisine to exploring hidden gems off the beaten path.
Puerto Rico offers an incredible mix of colonial history, Caribbean beaches, and lush tropical rainforest all without needing a passport. The cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, the canopy of El Yunque, the glow of the bioluminescent bay, and the flavor of a perfectly made mofongo create a travel experience that stays with you long after you leave.
A note before we begin: Puerto Rico isn't known for public transport, and this itinerary includes leaving the metro area. Renting a car is strongly recommended driving is straightforward and all GPS apps work perfectly.

Discover the Charms of Old San Juan
Day OneBegin your adventure by immersing yourself in the rich history and captivating architecture of Old San Juan. Park conveniently at La Puntilla Parking and take a leisurely stroll along the picturesque Paseo de la Princesa, soaking in the charm of colonial-era buildings and lush greenery.
Make your way to the historic walls of La Puerta de San Juan — the entrance to the old city — before venturing to the iconic Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and perhaps the most iconic fortification built by the Spanish in the Americas. El Morro is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
After exploring the fortifications, wander the cobblestone streets and embrace one of Puerto Rico's favorite pastimes: chinchorrear — bar hopping. Make sure to try the passion fruit mojitos!
Day TwoSail to Paradise
Embark on an unforgettable journey by boat to discover the untouched charm of Puerto Rico's beaches. Whether you opt for the tranquil shores of Icacos or the mesmerizing beauty of Culebra, each promises a perfect blend of relaxation and excitement.

Icacos
Set sail to this secluded cay boasting crystal-clear waters and untouched beaches — one of Puerto Rico's best-kept secrets.
Option Two
Culebra
Home to world-famous Flamenco Beach with pristine sands and vibrant marine life. Choose from snorkeling tours or beach day catamaran excursions.
Day ThreeSun, Sand & Gastronomic Delights
Escape to the sun-drenched beaches of San Juan for a day of relaxation and culinary exploration. While Condado Beach may be popular, it is not the greatest for swimming — I would even go as far as asking you not to swim there. Instead, venture a short distance to discover these hidden local gems.
La Posita en Piñones
A hidden gem, 15 min from Condado, park just across the beach, rent chairs and umbrellas, then explore the vibrant street food scene. Don't miss El Rinconcito Latino.
Piñones is famous for its authentic Puerto Rican street food — alcapurrias, bacalaítos, and freshly fried fritters eaten steps from the water. This is local life at its best.
Day FourEl Yunque & Luquillo Beach
Venture into the lush wonders of El Yunque National Forest for a day of adventure and rejuvenation amidst tropical rainforests and natural wonders. Located approximately 40 minutes from San Juan, El Yunque offers an array of hiking trails, natural pools, and scenic vistas to explore. Hike along the La Coca Trail to discover hidden ponds perfect for a refreshing swim, or head to El Angelito Trail for the thrill of a rope swing into a tranquil lagoon.
After your rainforest adventure, unwind at nearby Luquillo Beach, known for its pristine sands and calm waters. Rent chairs and umbrellas for a relaxing beach day, then explore the nearby Kioskos de Luquillo for a taste of authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. Indulge in frozen drinks behind Rellenao (kiosk #40) and savor traditional fritters like empanadillas (filled with seafood, shrimp, octopus, meat or pizza (my personal favorite)).
Before you Go
Getting Around
Renting a car is strongly recommended. Puerto Rico has limited public transport and this itinerary includes heading outside the metro area. All GPS apps work great. Driving is easy and signage is clear.
Best Time to Visit
Year-round destination. Peak season runs December through April. Summer brings lush greenery and fewer crowds. Expect afternoon showers in the rainforest — they pass quickly and are part of the magic.
Passport & Currency
No passport required for US citizens — Puerto Rico is a US territory. The US dollar is the currency. English is widely spoken, especially in San Juan, El Yunque, and Fajardo.
Where to Eat
Don't miss mofongo, alcapurrias, tostones, and fresh seafood. For fine dining, reserve at Santaella, or Marmalade well in advance. For local flavor, head straight to Piñones or the Kioskos de Luquillo.
